Flambe

Accidents as a rule are not funny but there are exceptions to every rule. Yesterday afternoon a semi hauling a load of bananas caught fire when the breaks overheated. I'm sorry but doesn't that sound like the perfect lead in to a joke?  I have been trying to come up with a punchline since I read about it but I keep getting hung up on Bananas Foster. Apparently it made for quite a hot and slimy mess closing all but one lane of traffic on I-5 until Wednesday evening. Other than the bananas, truck, and trailer there were no injuries.  If anyone has a punchline for this let me know!

So Much For Prayer

Should I mention from the beginning that today's post is another example of the strange events that seem to happen with regularity in Florida, or should I save it until the end for a surprise? Yes,I do realize I already gave the Florida part away...I'm not that far gone yet. Today's victim of what I have come to think of as "Florida Syndrome" is a 28 year old woman who blew through a stop sign into a yard bringing her car to a stop using the house instead of her brakes. When questioned by the deputies she explained she had closed her eyes to pray. She was cited for reckless driving and property damage.

The woman was taken for evaluation after she told cops she had been praying with her eyes closed at the time of the crash.

Missed It!

I don't think I get the history channel but if I do I missed the D.B. Cooper piece they did on Sunday and Monday. Apparently the cold case crew interviewed several people in Astoria,OR who remember a man calling himself Norman de Winter. The man claimed to be wealthy Swiss baron who made friends with the locals and extracted money from them before disappearing.  Several of the people the man befriended swore he was the same man in the sketch when D.B. Cooper made his famous skyjacking. I don't know what anyone else thinks but the First Officer of the flight also has a remarkable resemblance to the sketch, but surely the cold case crew would have looked into any connection to the flight crew...
Some “D.B. Cooper cash” is displayed at Collectors Universe in Santa Ana, Calif., in 2008. Brian Ingram, from Arkansas, found the sole link to the only unsolved airline hijacking in U.S. history buried along the Columbia River during a family vacation in 1980. Ingram brought the recovered money to Collectors Universe to be authenticated, certified and preserved.
An artist made these sketches of the skyjkacker known as Dan Cooper from the recollections of the passengers and crew of an Northwest Airlines jet he hijacked between Portland and Seattle on Thanksgiving eve in 1971. “Cooper” later parachuted from the plane with $200,000 of ransom money.
A hijacked Northwest Airlines jetliner 727 sits on a runway for refueling at Tacoma International Airport, Nov. 25, 1971, Seattle, Wash.
First Officer Bob Rataczak and stewardess Tina Mucklow of a hijacked Northwestern airliner walk to a conference with FBI after the plane landed, Wednesday, Nov. 25, 1971, in Reno, Nevada.
Is it just me,or does this guy look like the sketch?
Three members of the crew of a Northwest Airlines jet plane that was hijacked Wednesday, Nov. 24, 1971, discussed the experience the next day, in a news conference in Minneapolis. They are, left to right: First Officer William Rataczak; Capt. William Scott and stewardess Tina Mucklow, all of the Minneapolis area. Scott said it was his first hijack experience. The hijacker was given $2000,000 by the airline and apparently parachuted from the plane as it flew from Seattle, Wash., to Reno, Nev.

Will He Stay or Will He Go?

Larry the cat, aka Chief Mouser at #10 Downing Street, is in a state of uncertainty. Larry has been with David Cameron at #10 since 2011 but Cameron has resigned and will be leaving on Wednesday. Larry doesn't actually belong to the Prime Minister no matter who is holding the office. Larry officially works for Cabinet Office who donates money to fund the Chief Mouser position. It is unknown if Larry will carry on his duties with the new PM or if Larry will also resign his post. It is a sad day when  even the animals are feeling the unrest in the world today.

Tele Twain

We all know  Al Gore's remark about inventing the internet, though in his defense he didn't mean it the way it was interpreted according to Snopes. What most of us don't know is that in 1898 Mark Twain predicted the internet in a short story titled "From the 'London Times' in 1904". In the crime/mystery the man accused of murdering the inventor of the telelectroscope requests one for his cell on death row. Using the device he is able to speak to people all over the world and see the wonders to be seen. Sound familiar? Of course Mark Twain was what they called an early adopter in his time and was fascinated with technology. He was the first in his neighborhood to have a telephone and possibly the first author to use a typewriter. Just an interesting little tidbit to pass along on a Sunday.

Painting the Town

In respect to the negativity vortex currently swirling our collective minds ever closer to oblivion I thought a little something to lighten the atmosphere was in order for today's post. Conveniently it happens to be Body Painting Day in New York City. Even though it is too late to attend this years performance it is no less important to understand the concept behind the event, which is making art of all body types. I can only imagine the amount of talent it takes to turn a human body into this type of art and how the different "canvases" inspire the one of a kind works of art.

Flavor of the Month

Fair warning, if anyone gets sick at the thought of hair in their food quit reading right here. Six years ago a 23 year old woman was diagnosed with trichotillomania (a compulsion to pull out your hair) and trichophagia, the compulsion to eat hair. She became pregnant in 2014 and began having severe stomach pain and losing weight, the symptoms continued through her pregnancy and after delivery. Doctors were baffled as the tests for gall stones, stomach cancer and various other stomach related ailments were all negative. They finally performed an endoscopy and discovered to source of her discomfort,a giant hairball. The amount of hair was to much for the stomach acid to break down and had to be surgically removed. The final product weighed 14 pounds.
