One Ringy Dingy

Ring home security is offering $1 million for anyone who captures extraterrestrial beings on their ring device. The contest is open to adults 18 and older who capture unaltered evidence of extraterrestrial lifeforms. A space and extraterrestrial expert will review submissions which need to be received before November 3. No $hit!

When an Iowan woman was selected to have her belongings inspected by customs she declared a box of giraffe feces she had picked up on her trip to Kenya. She explained that she wanted to make a necklace from the giraffe feces like she had made from moose poop in the past. So aside from the woman's crappy taste in jewelery she didn't have to proper permits and inspections. Uninspected wild animal feces can cause several serious health issues so next time you feel the need to smuggle animal feces from foreign locations you may want to alter you plans.

More Festivities

As indicated in yesterday's post the longer nights bring on thoughts of malevolent spirits and how to keep them at bay. Cinnamon brooms, strips of cinnamon bark tied in a broom shape do double duty as an air freshener and paranormal protector. According to the "Farmer's Almanac" the thickness of the skins of onions, apples, corn husks and flowers blooming late are all signs of a rough winter.

Onion’s skin very thin,

Mild winter coming in;

Onion’s skin thick and tough,

Coming winter cold and rough.

Festive Fall?

There are several superstitions surrounding the fall season since in most places the days are more dark than light lending ample time for the imagination to do its thing. If you happen to catch a falling leaf it can mean either good luck or a wish granted, to be more specific if it's a red maple leaf it means luck in love, an orange leaf means inner transformation, where a gingko leaf means enlightenment, hope and resilience. Who knew?

Extremes

Some extreme sports are meticulously planned events where others kind of happen on their own like a cosmic bowling bowler wearing a dinosaur costume. Then there is the Japanese log riding extreme sport that goes back centuries, it is held every 6 years and draws over a half a million spectators as men and women cut preselected trees, ride them down the mountain then parade them through town to replace the pillars of the Suwa Shrine and yes it's as dangerous as it looks. Then there's mashed potato wrestling in South Dakota which is weird since Idaho is the state known for everything potato.

Bears in Mind

Bears are becoming a big problem in Japan both due to an aging human population left to the rural areas as the younger generation has migrated to the cities and of course our nemesis, climate change, which is interrupting the bear food supply chain like the acorns that normally make up their biggest food source. There are no clear answers at this time on how to cope with the increasing bear foraging area but the authorities in several areas are going to employ "The Monster Wolf", a mechanical wolf that has been in use around Takikawa since 2020 with some success. Bottom line like most everywhere else is some animal populations are growing faster than humans but without enough food to go around. No idea what the bears are supposed to eat if they are successful at keeping them out of the urban areas.
