Farting Around

There's a new health trend making the rounds called fart walking, the theory behind (look at that a pun!) the trend is a 10-20 minute walk after eating especially when you're feeling bloated will shake loose the gas and bring relief. The next step involved medical advisors and researchers who both concurred that, yes light exercise does indeed help relieve gas. Of course runners have been known to soil themselves so it might not work exactly the same for everyone.

Hunky Dory

Everyone knows hunky dory means everything is fine but how did it come to mean fine? It has nautical connotations and comes from  Japanese Honcho dori meaning main street where sailors went for diversion and services in the 1860s. Next nautical term is sink or swim which by the definition really should be sink or die. In Medieval times suspected witches were thrown into deep water where if they sank they died and if they swam they were witches and were executed. We'll wrap up today with loose cannon which comes from the 1900s when cannons were mounted on the decks of warships and would sometimes come loose during combat or storms causing great damage and we all know about today's loose cannons.

Cool Cats

Every generation thinks they invented slang when most terms are simply recycled from the past. Today we will look at a few examples of phrase recycling like: dig it originated in 1930s jazz circles and means to feel something deep in your bones, groovy is usually associated with the 1960s but again goes further back to the 1920s jazz era and is thought to emerged from the grooves of vinyl records and the repetitive patterns of popular music, last we'll look at hipster which also goes back to the 1920s and referred to pushing the limits with style, music and way of life. Hipster comes from the slang term hep meaning up to date. The term was later associated with hip hugging pants of the 60s and again in the 90s with those educated Bohemian youth living in gentrified neighborhoods.

I'll Bee Darned

Most everyone know how smart crows are, how they can use tools and recognize human faces but what about bees? In 2005 researchers tested bees ability to remember pictures of human faces, then they rewarded correct matches with drops of sugar water and the bees were right 90% of the time even two days after seeing them and having the rewards removed. The research showed that a complex brain is not needed to tell differences in the environment but it shouldn't be too surprising since bees can visit up to 5,000 flowers a day and remember which ones give off the most nectar.

S'more Soup

Ramen seems to be something that you either love or hate and even though it has helped a lot of people in slim times there isn't much nutrition to be had nor much variety unless you're thinking about Cup Noodles. Cup Noodles recently introduced Campfire S'mores though this isn't their first deviation into sweet rather than savory flavors, before S'mores they had a breakfast flavored like pancakes and also a pumpkin spice flavor ( that crap is everywhere!). If you feel like this is something you can't go another day without it is available only at Walmart for $1.18 for a limited time. I'll pass.

BED

What's BED you ask? It stands for Banana Equivalent Dose which is an informal measurement of the amount of radiation in bananas. It doesn't mean much health wise since the human body is 280 times more radioactive than a banana. In both cases the radiation comes from K-40 a potassium isotope which is harmless in low doses though it has been know to fool radiation detectors examining truckloads of bananas for nuclear weapons. Who knew?

Mt. Trash

What do you suppose has happened to all the detritus from people climbing Mt. Everest all these years? It's still there! Yes, that's right in the typical fashion of the entitled no one ever considered cleaning up after themselves so the Nepal government is funding a group of soldiers and Sherpas who have so far removed 11 tons of garbage and 4 dead bodies, yes they even left the fallen behind. Since the peak was first conquered in 1953 thousands have climbed and left behind whatever they didn't see fit to carry out. They estimate there's another 40-50 tons left to be dragged out and recycled if possible. And now humans are doing the same thing on the moon.
