In this case a penny saved is considerably more than a penny earned. In 1947 a sixteen year old boy received a penny in change for his school lunch. The boy happened to be an avid coin collector (numismatist) and recognized the penny as a 1943 pressed from bronze, one of 20 such pennies. He had heard rumors that Ford Motor Co was offering a new Ford for one of the coins but after contacting them he found out that was an urban legend. The man died in the fall last year and the penny was left to Heritage Auctions who started bids at $100,000 from today through Thursday. Another of the bronze pennies sold for $1.7 million in 2010.
