Even those who were born yesterday would likely know the Morton Salt girl with her umbrella and salt container spilling its contents but what about the back story? Chicago in the 19th century had a salt business called Richmond & Company. A businessman from Nebraska named Joy Morton acquired a major portion of the salt company in 1889 knowing that the growing population and meat packing would create a greater demand for salt. The company incorporated in 1910 becoming Morton Salt. Up to that time salt was chunky and hard to use as it had to be broken up to be of use that is until Morton added an anti-caking agent, magnesium carbonate, and the easy pour spout on the same type of container still used today. That is why the salt is shown pouring out of the container on the label. Now you know the rest of the story.
