They Love Rock and Roll

Russia in the 1950s banned western music but that didn't stop the young Russian's desire for Bill Haley and the Comets "Rock Around the Clock" (and other tunes). One young engineering student sold blood regularly so he could save up for a lathe to make bootleg music with. The practice involved going through hospital trash to salvage the x-rays to record on. They called it bone music because of the bone images on the old x-rays. They were far from the ideal recording medium and didn't last long but the young music lovers were fulfilled none the less. When I first read about this practice I was surprised that it would work then I remembered when I was young paper thin sample records were sent in the mail,it seems like they were from magazines but I don't recall that part for sure.

It's Worldwide

The regular readers among you will attest to the fact that I have a propensity to feature Florida happenings on a regular basis since there seems to be no end to the odd things that go on there (maybe it's something in the water?). Today's post will take some of the heat off not only Florida but the rest of the US as well. A man in Humpty Doo, Australia (yes that is really the name!) called the police to complain that his father had burned his cannabis plants. The son had recently moved back into his father's home and they had an argument about his plants so the dad burned them. When the son discovered his plants in ashes he called the police and admitted he had been illegally growing marijuana just so he could report his father's actions. The police were unable to press charges as the evidence had been burned and of course the father hadn't done anything illegal. Sounds to me like another case of the entitled children refusing to grow up. I wonder where he is going to live now?

Hide the Doritos!

Apparently Doritos is out to expand their customer base in a big way, that or they had an excess of funds in their advertising budget. Which ever the case may be Doritos is the first company to send a commercial into space. The target audience is 42 light years away in the Ursa Major Constellation. It is a star similar to our Sun and could harbor life supporting planets. I still don't know why Doritos would spend an undisclosed amount of money for the ad which if seen by aliens would most likely not be understood, but it was probably more for the publicity of being the first company to advertise in space...it's not like a bag of Doritos have any chance of making it to another galaxy and remaining fresh, and what are the aliens going to do call an 800 number and place an order? With any luck they won't mistake it for an act of war.

Whatever Works?

I have no idea if dolls made for pedophiles are a god send or some kind of sick joke. The maker of the dolls claims  they have helped him in his struggle with an ongoing sexual attraction to children. His company makes lookalikes of children as young as five and in the UK childlike sex dolls are available in a size comparable to a three year old girl. The customers write to thank the makers for allowing them their fantasies without actually committing a crime. There are also childlike sex robots being constructed with the same purpose in mind. It seems weird to me but if it is saving children from abuse I would be in favor.

He Should Have Waited

Today is another example of states other than Florida having wacky things happen just to prove I'm not necessarily singling Florida out, however Florida still seems to be ahead in the crazy game. A Kentucky man went into a Chuck E Cheese's and filled out a job application at 2 pm and was asked to return at 4 pm for an interview. When he came in for the interview he announced he wanted to rob the restaurant and implied he had a weapon. The manager told the man he didn't have access to the safe and suggested that he should leave. The man apologized to the employees, started crying and left. The police are looking for the man and hope to track him down from the information he provided on the application. My question is why didn't he at least wait to see if he got the job before he shared his plan to rob the place?

Moon Shot

Remember Sputnik? or if you are too young to actually remember it it is probably included in history lessons as a crucial point in the space race, not to mention causing the NASA folks to panic because Russia was the first to orbit the planet with a manned flight. At that point the Air Force stepped up to the plate with a plan to put the US back on the top of the heap but fortunately that plan was never carried out. Their plan was to nuke the moon. They figured the explosion would be seen from Earth and leave everyone in awe, then part of the team (Carl Sagan) begin to worry about the possibility of radiation from the explosion making it back to Earth and the plan was eventually scrapped. A question that wasn't addressed with all their combined brilliance was what effect an explosion of that magnitude would have had on the tides of our planet which was one of my first thoughts, but hey? what do I know,I'm not a rocket scientist!
