Other than "yum" I'd never given German Chocolate Cake much thought but if you are uninformed about the cake's origin that makes at least two of us. Once upon a time it was called German's Chocolate Cake, over the many years since the cake's invention the apostrophe was dropped changing the name considerably. A man named Sam German created the mild dark chocolate baking bar in 1852,Baker's named the bar after him,"Baker's German's Sweet Chocolate". In 1957 the Dallas Morning Star published the first recipe for German's Chocolate Cake,as it gained popularity and was republished the possessive form was dropped essentially renaming it German Chocolate Cake leaving people with the impression the recipe originated in Germany. Speaking of cakes, the Black Forest Cake (double yum!) is basically from Germany, though not from the Black Forest itself!
