Apparently there are left coiled snails and right coiled snails and like with humans the left coiled are in the minority in a big way, 1 in 40,000. Ned is a lefty named after Ned Flanders of the Simpsons who opened a store called The Leftorium. Ned was found in a New Zealand garden by a woman that recognized him for his unique coil, she in turn contacted New Zealand Geographic to enlist their help in finding Ned a mate. Even though snails are hermaphrodites, having both sex organs on their necks, they still need another snail to rub against in order to reproduce and poor Ned is so far out of luck as he can only mate with another left coiled snail. Who knew?
