Thai people are mostly Buddhists who believe animals are sentient beings who should be treated with kindness and compassion and doing them any harm creates negative karma. The elephant is their national animal though they are being exploited in recent times. Cats and dogs for the most part are not treated as pets but allowed to roam and mostly fend for themselves. Then there's the water buffalo who have been replaced by modern means yet are still celebrated every year with their own festival though it doesn't really look like they are having that good of a time.
