Apparently trunk-or-treating has been going on since the early 90s, though mostly in suburban areas where it's a long way between houses making it both inconvenient and more dangerous for the kids/parents. Essentially it's Halloween tailgating where parents gather in parking lots or churches, schools or malls, decorate their vehicles and pass out candy to the kids as they go from car to car, which also makes it easier for mobility issues. Of course some folks feel the need to both trunk-or-treat and trick-or-treat...candy greed, it's a real thing!
