There's actually a "Talk like a cowboy" day, it's on the 4th Saturday in July, more on that later. Western book, films, and TV would have a person thinking that cowboys yelled yee-haw at the drop of a hat but in reality it was more of a pop culture phrase than anything a self respecting cowboy would say. The phrase itself most likely morphed from the directions when driving horses and oxen where gee meant right and haw meant left. Real life cowboys were more likely to say, whoa, git along, or come by, plus only 1 in 3 cowboys were white. The rest were black, Mexican or indigenous. The following list are other phrases used by cowboys:
- "Howdy": A classic greeting, like "hello" in the West.
- "Above Board": Honest and legitimate.
- "Ace-High": Fine, luxurious, and respectable.
- "Airin' the Lungs": Cussing.
- "Airin' the Paunch": Vomit, throw-up, regurgitate.
- "All Hat and No Cattle": Someone who talks a big game but doesn't deliver.
- "Bellyaching": Complaining.
- "Barn Sour": Sad, downcast.
- "Fixin' To": About to, going to.
- "Hog-Killin' Time": A real good time.
- "That dog won't hunt": That won't work.
- "Wheel-horse": An intimate friend, one's right-hand man.
