A picture is worth a thousand words doesn't apply to the ambiguous emoji. They may still mean what you think they do as long as you are communicating within your own age group but other than that, all bets are off. For instance the slightly smiling face is mainly used sarcastically, like dry humor or fake happiness, not actual joy. The thumbs up is considered passive aggressive and the laughing-crying face is used under duress. Still the use depends on who is on the receiving end of the message so chances are if they are in your age group it will most likely be interpreted how you meant it to be, then again it might be a better idea to exercise the old safer than sorry adage, and not use them at all.
