Most people think of gambling in the sense of casinos or other games of chance but there is something else going on that can be just as addicting. People are sometimes spending up to thousands a week on a clever marketing ploy called blind boxes. Activewear companies, bookstores and even candy stores all sell mystery bundles of their products and people buy them for the rush of anticipation at what "might" be inside. Labubu, a toy company, is currently dominating the blind box market with a line of collectible toys which prompt people to keep purchasing blind boxes until they complete the set. In 2024 adults bought more toys for themselves than they did for children and so far 2025 is following that trend. Behaviorists blame global turmoil for the trend and like gambling some of the people spending the money can't really afford it.
