Starting with Eckerd College in 1973 several colleges around the US, including MIT and Northern Colorado now allow pets in the dorms. The schools find that it helps the student build connections, reduce stress and anxiety and homesickness. Pets also help the students transition to adulthood by learning to care for themselves and other living beings. The schools all have their own regulations about the pets but generally only one pet per student and there usually is a fee of some sort depending on the type of pet and of course the pets must be healthy and vaccinated.
