In the early 1900s long before emoticons were in use there were special symbols the train surfers developed to communicate dangers, where meals could be found, and other details important to their survival. Hobos would use chalk or charcoal to leave the message in obscure locations like under bridges, the base of water towers, on walls or fences, and even in sewer trestles. It kind of puts a person in mind of tagging though there doesn't seem to be any real message behind tagging.
