Nerdom

Nerds of today vs nerds of the past are two different things. In the past nerds were associated with pocket protectors, Steve Urkel, or even Sheldon Cooper but today nerd denotes people with specialized interests like comic books or odd hobbies and instead of an insult nerd tends to mean cool. Most people believe the word "nerd" came from the Dr. Seuss book, "If I Ran the Zoo", first published in 1950 though the word "nert" from around 1940, an alteration of the word nut, meaning stupid or crazy person, other possibilities on nerd's origin are spelling "drunk" backwards (knurd), or the shortening of Edgar Bergen's dummy, Mortimer Snerd. Other well known nerds include, Bill Gates and Steve Jobs. To nerd, or not to nerd?
