Sundae Best

Pretty much everyone knows what an ice cream sundae is but not why it's spelled that way. As often is the case with something relatively simple the answer isn't easy. One reason is that several locations take credit for inventing the sundae and each one has their own story. Sundaes were created in the late 19th century because pharmacies were barred from serving soda on Sunday, so instead of making ice cream floats they began making ice cream with chocolate or fruit syrup for topping. Some credit a Wisconsin soda fountain for the name as they served ice cream with chocolate syrup every Sunday until a young customer said it should be available all week so it was named "sundae" to avoid confusion on when it was available. Others claim the name was used so religious folks wouldn't be offended by it being named after the Sabbath. Then there was a drug store in Ithaca, NY serving what they called a Cherry Sunday ( ice cream with cherry syrup and a candied cherry on top) who even tried to trademark the name but were unsuccessful. No matter where the name came from most people would agree, ice cream in its many iterations is a cool treat!
