Who Put the Veteran in Veterans Day

On November 11th 1918 an armistice was signed by the Allies and Germany putting an end to WWI, the following  November 11th the first Armistice Day was celebrated. WWI was supposed to be the war to end all wars, which of course it wasn't. By the 1950s people started thinking the name Armistice Day was outdated, this is where a shoe repairman from Emporia, Kansas named Alvin King comes in. He' lost family in WWII and thought all veterans should be honored on November 11th. He formed a committee in 1953 and the city of Emporia celebrated the first Veterans Day. Emporia's congressman liked the idea and took it to Washington where President Eisenhower (also a Kansan) liked the idea too. It was signed into law in 1954. Thanks to all the veterans!
