Hive Crime

Is nothing sacred? These are the desperate times that are often referred to. Hive crime is just what it sounds like, stealing bee hives. It initially sounds like the start of a bad joke but it's quite real and terrifying when coupled with other things going on. Organized gangs are going into California's Central Valley with forklifts and trucks and hauling off hives left there by beekeepers to pollinate the crops, mainly almond trees but other crops as well. This whole business started around 2016 when 1,695 hives were stolen. You're probably wondering how much a bee hive could be worth, the answer is around $200 and up though before the mass thefts hives were valued at about $35. Not only is this a threat to crops it is also forcing beekeepers out of business. To make matters worse that damn Phil saw his shadow!
