Top Secret

A few days ago I came across the supposed origin of the idiom 'keep it under your hat'. I found the definition doubtful as it claimed to have come from medieval times when archers kept extra bow strings under their hats to keep them dry. After a little research the real meaning was revealed in all its simplicity. To keep something under your hat is to keep it in your head,as in secret,do not repeat along with several other terms. The phrase wasn't introduced into English until the 19th century which also discredits the bow string story. No matter what the story it is always important to check more than one resource,  the military recommends five sources to verify as fact, which in turn would be useful in eliminating the phrase "fake news".
