I enjoy finding out how phrases originated though some of them don't make much sense once you know. Running amok had an early start in the 18th and 19th centuries as a medical term. Tribes in Malaysia began having bouts of erratic behavior and would go on violent killing sprees. When European visitors observed these fits they thought it was a mental affliction which they called "amok". Amok referred to a band of warriors known as Amuco who routinely went on violent rampages. Next time you feel the need to run amok make sure you time yourself,you never know when you might set a world record!
