Pies have been around since ancient Rome though the crust, sometimes called a coffin, were only to preserve the insides of the pie which at that time were mainly meat and other savory ingredients. Pies were particularly useful to sailors as a way to preserve food for there voyages that didn't take a lot of space or care like bringing livestock on board. Pies made with fruits and other sweetening weren't common until the 1500s. The word pie is thought to be a nod to the magpie with their black and white plumage much like the lighter crust color and darker meats inside,it could also reference the magpie's nest which contain everything the bird can gather much like the ingredients in the early pies.
