Pass the Pie

November is the month of the big meal, the one where most people eat more than they should then slip into a food coma, but wait! How about a piece of pie after the big meal? Do you have room in your stuffed stomach for a little more? Mostly you do and you can either thank or curse the hormone ghrelin. The purpose of this hormone is to make you feel hungry especially for sweets and fatty foods. Of course the other side of the ghrelin coin is another hormone called leptin which acts as a mediator and tells us when we are full. This year after you consume your Thanksgiving dinner you can amuse yourself by imagining the two hormones arguing about whether you should have a piece of pie or shut your pie hole.
