Puzzled

Does anyone understand cryptocurrency? After reading about it for the last couple of years I'm more confused than I was in the beginning. Crypto means hidden or secret which is easy enough to understand in relation to cryptogram puzzles but not so much with money. I'm not getting the part that whoever wants to start selling their own imaginary money not only can legally do that but that people will buy it and what about inflation? Wouldn't all that imaginary money be worthless if there was too much of it that wasn't printed? At any rate another one has jumped on the bandwagon and introduced his brand? of money called Castello Coin which can be purchased online for $.44 a unit. To draw attention to his offering he displayed a solid gold cube in Central Park worth $11.7 million that the artist made for the occasion. So does that mean he has that much ($11.7 million) to back up his buck? or does it mean that he spent his wad on the cube and need to recoup some cash?
