In the Victorian era people romanticized the physical effects of tuberculosis to the extent that some people hoped they would get sick so they could become pale with flushed cheeks,and thin waists. They didn't have to try very hard to be infected as little was known about avoiding the disease plus the poverty of the era added to the spread. Now let's fast forward to the pandemic we are currently hoping to end. Are the anti-vaxxers wanting to become sick so they can be somehow martyred? or is it maybe a twist on Munchhausen? It's no easier to understand their refusal to comply with CDC suggestions to protect themselves and their loved ones today than it was in the beginning so did they mentally go back in time and ignore the progress science has made since Victorian days? Their rights? What about the rest of us?
