Who Put the Pin in Pinata?

Though it didn't make the monthly planner today is National Pinata Day. This holiday only started recently (2016) which might be why it missed the planner. Now for the interesting part...most everyone associates pinatas with Mexico and though they are a popular party prop there that is not their country of origin. It is believed they were first used by the Chinese to celebrate the New Year, then in the 13th century Marco Polo brought them to Italy and the final leg of the journey to Mexico was around the 16th century. The word Pinata is Italian for "fragile pot"which became part of the celebration of Lent upon its arrival in Europe.
