New Parents

No matter the species new parents have big adjustments to make with little sleep under their belts still they can be thankful that they aren't chinstrap penguins. Even though they look cute and seem to be mellow being a penguin is a stressful undertaking. They live in crowded colonies and the threat from predators in constant. In a recent study researchers found out how the penguins cope with their seemingly continuous vigil and the answer is thousands of mini naps a day. They were observed blinking their eyes for about 4 second intervals and were fitted with sensors to determine if they were nodding out which was what it turned out to be. The parent watching the young average around 11 hours of sleep with their mini naps while the other parent is getting food for the family. Being a penguin with young is enough to convince most folks of the benefits of birth control!
