Not a Port-a-Potty

I imagine many of you have neither seen nor used an outhouse, and even if you have chances are you didn't spend any time wondering about the crescent moon on the door. There are actually several reasons for the crescent moon cutout: light, ventilation and it was also used to denote a woman's outhouse. Since the population when outhouses were widely in use was mostly illiterate writing men on women on the door would have been fruitless. The moon was the symbol of womanhood, the sunburst or star sign was the symbol for man. The reason the star sign was eventually lost from the outhouse door was the women's outhouse was better maintained and became what we would call a unisex facility today.
