 Perhaps you're wondering what 27 has to do with anything, the answer is the number of official versions of the American flag. The original flag had 13 stars and 13 stripes it was approved in June of 1777, that version lasted until 1795 when two more states were added making 15 stars and 15 stripes, from 1818 on  the design went back to 13 stripes with changes only in the number of stars until we reached our current version with 50 stars after adding Alaska and Hawaii with the last change happening on July 4, 1960. An Ohio high school student made the current design and only received a B- for his efforts.
