Not What You Think

Chlorine is one of the most recognizable smells and it's mainly associated with clean things, but as it turns out that doesn't apply to pools. When you smell a strong chlorine smell at a pool it is because the pool is not properly treated and the smell is actually a chemical irritant called chloramines which occur when chlorine combines with urine, feces, sweat and dirt from swimmers bodies meaning the water is anything but clean. The chloramines are also responsible for the burning and red eyes. Next time you smell what you think is too much chlorine remember it is a warning that more chlorine is needed. This explains why the local pool smells so strongly of chlorine,so much so that I quit swimming there because I could still smell and taste it for at least a day after swimming there...Yuck!
