When a person thinks of Texas mushrooms isn't the first thing to come to mind but that hasn't stopped them from choosing an official state mushroom. Only two other states have state mushrooms, Oregon and Minnesota. The mushroom known as both the Texas Star and Devil's Cigar is fairly rare and mostly grows from the stumps of cedar elm trees in the central and northern parts of the state but is also found in Japan. Before it becomes the Texas Star it looks like a fat stogie growing and as it releases its spores and takes on the star shape it makes a hissing noise. For those of you who are wondering it isn't considered an edible mushroom.
