Dark Past

In the past I have offered the origins of several nursery rhymes most of which were from the 1600s or even earlier but the one we're exploring today is more recent. The Itsy Bitsy Spider (or as known in UK Incy Wincy Spider,or in California Bloomin Bloody Spider)is probably from around 1920 but possibly earlier and is thought to have replaced the original words to a rhyme called the Tipsy Dipsy Hobo which came from down and out people getting drunk and trying to catch a train. The words to Tipsy Dipsy are:"The Tipsy Dipsy Hobo drinks from the lager spout, here comes the train it knocks the hobo out. Out comes a man to pick up all the brains but a Tipsy Dipsy Hobo drinks from the spout again." Not exactly a child's nursery rhyme.
