Are you thinking I have more to say about the lack of quality in online maps? Beep...you lose! What today's post is about is SPAM,and since the only thing I didn't find about SPAM was that it is maps spelled backwards, I thought it my duty to point that detail out. The SPAM I am referring to isn't the kind you get in your email, but the kind that was born (for lack of a better word) at Hormel on July 5,1937. The name was the result of a contest for what to name Hormel's Spiced Ham product, the prize was $100. Hormel officials claim SPAM means Shoulder of Pork and Ham (ingredients: chopped pork shoulder with ham meat added, salt, water, modified potato starch as a binder and sodium nitrite). Others have guessed the name to mean "Something Posing As Meat","Specially Processed Artificial Meat",Stuff Pork and Ham",Spare Parts Animal Meat" and "Special Product of Austin Minnesota" (home of Hormel). There are currently 13 varieties of SPAM sold. Only Guam consumes more SPAM than Hawaii in the US states and territories. Americans consume 113 million cans of SPAM per year. Hormel holds the SPAM JAM parade and fireworks annually the weekend of July 4th. SPAM,the all American canned meat product!
