Keep It Under Your Hat

I recently read an article about hats and was dumbfounded (pun intended) to find out that originally Dunce Caps were thought to receive knowledge and funnel it into the head of the wearer, they were also called thinking caps. The hats took their name from a 13th century philosopher named John Duns.  As Duns fell out of favor the hats eventually came to mean the opposite and they were used as punishment for unruly or slow school children who were made to wear the hat and stand in the corner in hope of humiliating them into good behavior.
