Penis Parades

Today's post may be a bit premature as I didn't find as much information as I would normally gather before calling it a wrap. Apparently Japan has several Penis Festivals/Parades but I'm not clear on if they are all on the same date nor if they are all celebrating the same thing. The parade that takes place in Nagaoka is the second Sunday in March and is for brides in their first year of marriage. It is thought to promote fertility and marital bliss. The Penis Festival in Kawasaki is held in early April (different dates) to celebrate the penis and fertility but is thought to have been started in the 17th century by prostitutes to protect them from sexually transmitted diseases. Today the proceeds from the festival go to HIV prevention and safe sex practices.
