After 31 years as the most popular dog in the US the Labrador has been unseated by the French bulldog. That was the good news, the bad news is any dog breed in the number one position suffers as a breed. Greed is the main reason this happens as people think all they need to do is own a purebred and they can breed it for extra cash, this is where the problems start and there is even a name for it, backyard breeding. Without the knowledge of the various lines of a breed and the problems associated with those lines creates a recipe for disaster, often doubling up on genes that can cause serious health problem and never mind conformation faults. Bottom line is if you get a dog to make money or even decide to breed to get the money you spent on the dog back, please just don't buy the dog. Leave the breeding to the professionals who know what they're doing and when you do want to buy a purebred do your research not only on the breed itself but test results that should be supplied to you by the breeders to show your dog has tested clear for any of the problems linked to their breed. When all is said and done if all the steps are followed correctly there is very little if any money to be made breeding dogs, a pet is to be loved, not exploited.
