Something's Fishy

The original recipe (no, not KFC) for ketchup was more like soy sauce is today. The first known iteration of the condiment was made in China around 300 BCE and was a salty paste made from fish entrails, meat by-products and soy beans, the name oddly enough hasn't changed that much. Ketchup at that time was called get-thcup, koe-cheup, ketsiap, or kicap depending on the dialect. By the early 18th century ketchup had worked its way to England where they had no soy beans so it was altered again but still no tomatoes as they were thought to be poisonous. The first tomato based ketchup was made in the US in 1812 and about half a century later Henry J. Heinz founded his company and the rest as they say is history.
