Silly String is one of many things that were created accidently. In the 1960s an inventor and a chemist got together to produce a mixture that could be sprayed from a can and rapidly harden to produce a quick way to set broken bones. They came up with a mixture that set quickly and held but they couldn't find a nozzle suited to the task. After testing over 500 nozzles and finding one that propelled the substance 30 feet they changed their thinking from cast making to making a plaything. They demonstrated their invention for Wham-O and after decorating the office with a whole lot of colored string they were shown the door. The owners of Wham-O spotted some of the left over string and wanted a larger sample so the next day they sent a telegram asking for 24 cans for a marketing test. In 1972 a patent was issued and the rest is history, so much for medical advances!
