Soap wasn't always used for cleansing our hands and bodies, originally soap was used for washing clothing and raw fibers to prepare them for weaving. So what was used until soap caught on? Coffee, along with scented olive oils and other substances. Before coffee became a popular drink around the 15th century it was used as a cleanser and for getting rid of odors. Around the 10th century physicians and botanists began writing about bunk, a compound similar to modern brewed coffee that could be used for handwashing without drying out the skin but would remove strong odors. Various recipes for bunk often included spices like cloves, cinnamon, and fruit peels. Bunk eventually fell out of favor as coffee became more valued as a beverage.
