Today's post may offer an explanation of the phrase, "busy as a bee". Though most people probably haven't considered that those busy bees might be charged up on a caffeine buzz which they consume in the process of pollinating plants. About 55% of flowering plants have caffeine laden nectar and the bees enjoy the buzz so much they return to those plants more frequently that the decaf type of plants. You may be wondering why plants other than the obvious coffee, tea and kola have caffeine. The answer is natures way of keeping the pests off the plants as the other insects don't tolerate caffeine like the bees do but caffeine still can't be used as an insecticide as too much of it harms the plants. Always a twist in nature but that is what strikes the balance.
