As with most things that don't make a lot of sense the government was involved when it came to rules and regs on batteries. They decided to name the various battery sizes from the alphabet, A, B, C and D. There was also a larger battery that was called a No. 6 which got to keep its name. As battery technology improved new sizes were made and added to the naming system; AA and AAA. So what happened to the A and B batteries? these mid sized batteries no longer had a market and became obsolete though the high drain C and D batteries were still used in other applications. Guess who named a battery a battery...none other than good old Ben Franklin! He thought the early batteries were like pieces of artillery lined up for combined action, he was always good for turning a phrase.
