No one knows exactly what causes puppy breath but most people agree that it is a pleasant smell though the description of what it smells like varies. Some folks liken the smell to honey, vanilla or sweetened yogurt with the last choice being the most likely clue as to what causes the phenomena. Though no official studies have been done most vets agree the smell comes from a combination of the enzymes to break down the milk diet and the gases from the bacteria that thrive in the milk rich environment since once the puppies have been on solid food for a few weeks the puppy breath is no longer apparent. So...if you kept a puppy on a milk diet into adulthood (not recommended) would it still have puppy breath?
