Order of the Pug

In 1738 the pope banned Roman Catholics from belonging to secret societies. As with most rules there were groups ready to ignore the ban, one of those groups was the Order of the Pug, aka Mops-Orden. They chose the pug to represent their group because they're a symbol of steadfastness, loyalty and trust. They were one of the first secret groups to not only welcome women (Catholics) but to allow them to assume positions of authority. The initiation must have made it hard for members to not laugh or maybe they actually took it all seriously? Step one was to wear a brass collar and scratch at the door to be let in. They were then led around by the collar while existing members barked at them. The final step was to kiss the butt of a porcelain pug. I guess that's one way to prove yourself.
