Thanks to Susan for drawing my attention to the fact that Leprechauns have evil cousins known as Clurichauns who are heavy drinkers and not to be trusted,of course Leprechauns aren't exactly trustworthy either. There are no female leprechauns causing me to wonder where leprechauns come from. As for the color green associated with today's holiday,St. Patrick originally wore St. Patrick's Blue which is a pale shade. It wasn't until the 18th century Irish independence movement that the color green became part of the holiday. Even though today St. Patrick's Day goes hand in hand with beer drinking it was considered a religious holiday in Ireland through most of the 20th century and the pubs were closed. In 1970 St. Patrick's became a national holiday and every since the stout has flowed freely.
