Corny

Nowadays popcorn and movies go hand in hand but that wasn't how it started. In the 19th century popcorn was common at circuses and street fairs but when theaters started opening in the early 1900s they wanted to offer a upscale experience with plush furniture and carpets so they didn't want snacks to ruin the furnishings plus they thought eating crunchy snacks would interfere with reading of subtitles though people snuck in their favorite snacks anyway. The theaters changed their mind in the 1930s when the depression drove the masses to the movies and popcorn was an inexpensive offering. By 1945 more than half the popcorn consumed in the US was in theaters which brings us to today's movie/popcorn trivia, popcorn sold in theaters is marked up 1,275% making more money for the theater than the ticket sales.
