New traditions sounds like an oxymoron but recent traditions isn't much better at conveying the idea of why some Christmas traditions weren't practiced long enough ago for several age groups to know when and why they came into existence. For instance,ugly sweaters weren't a thing until two Vancouver,Canada guys decided to throw a cheesy party in 2002,and the elf on the shelf is an even newer practice. The elf got its start in 2005 after a mother daughter duo coauthored a book,"The Elf on the Shelf:A Christmas Tradition" which included an elf, but sales didn't really take off until Jennifer Garner was photographed carrying an Elf on the Shelf box around New York City in 2007.
