For those of you thinking that it's early to be saying Happy Independence Day the 4th is actually too late since the vote for independence took place on July 2. In June of 1776 the Second Continental Congress selected a committee of 5 to draft a statement of independence from British rule. On July 2 congress formally approved the resolution, on July 4 editing was complete and the document was sent for printing and finally signed by the delegates on August 2. There was no celebration in 1776 though in 1777 Boston and Philadelphia both held fireworks and military demonstrations on the 4th.
