Time to feed the yuck factor and or hypochondriacs in case anyone needs that kind of thing! In a recent case of hairy tongue syndrome a man's tongue grew a think mat of green. As off-putting as it looks it is a benign condition they think is caused by a combination or poor oral hygiene, older age, smoking, alcohol use, excessive coffee or tea consumption and certain medications, mainly antibiotics which oddly enough are also used to treat the condition. It also doesn't limit the color to green and is usually found in men. Though the exact cause is unknown it is believed the normal sloughing off of the surface of the tongue is interrupted which causes the build up. It usually goes away in a matter of days or weeks when treated with antibiotics and brushing the tongue several times a day.
