Naming an Icon

Bugs Bunny didn't start out with that name, first he was called Happy Rabbit. Warner Brothers writer Ben Hardaway, whose nickname was Bugs, directed a short film featuring a sneaky rabbit. The cartoon was called "Porky's Hare Hunt". As the animators for the next short starring Happy Rabbit were working on the images one of them labeled a sketch "Bug's Bunny" to make it clear that the drawing was part of Hardaway's project. The label was mistaken for the name of the character, and the animators started referring to Happy Rabbit as Bugs Bunny...an icon was born. Though he had already been around for awhile his birthday is thought to be July 27,1940. Bugs was the second (Mickey Mouse was the first) animated character to have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
