A Missed Mystery

Yesterday was the first I had ever heard about Maree Man,a mysterious giant geoglyph in the Australian outback. It was discovered in 1998 by a pilot flying from Maree to Coober Pedy and was so distinct at that time it could be seen from space, not so today. It has been slowly fading over the years, eroding from the weather, until it can no longer be seen by Google Earth though at this time it can still be from the ground it is likely to fade completely within a years time. The creator of Maree Man was never known for certain, though one artist reportedly told friends he had been paid $10,000 to create the piece. Now for the reason I'm upset by this...I flew over that area in 2002 traveling from Sydney to Alice Springs and the pilot failed to point it out to the half dozen passengers on the flight,I would have been so excited to be able to see something other than the continuous red desert, another missed opportunity that I didn't even know I had missed until yesterday!
